Question Of The Week 12/18/11

My favorite holiday memory was when I went up to New York City last year to go and visit my family. I had a great time because I was able to see all of my cousins who I am really close with. Being able to spend time with them really allowed me to release a lot of stress and enjoy the break. Also because for New Years Eve I went to Times Square and watched the ball drop into the new year. This was one of the best experiences I have ever had because of the amount of people there and the excitement in the air. We had to get there early in the morning in order to get a good spot in Times Square which in the end was worth the wait.

The cartoon was drawn by Nate Beeler who is an award winning cartoonist for The Washington Examiner. His cartoons are also featured in The San Francisco Examiner, and have been featured in USA Today, Time, and Newsweek. The key objects in the cartoon are the frontrunners for the 2012 Presidential election. Mitt Romney is criticized for his $10,000 bet that he placed with Rick Perry. Newt Gingrich is shown as somebody who has problems with his own personal relationships and that he has a lot of issues in his past. President Obama believes that all Americans will support his policies as shown in the cartoon. Then Uncle Sam then ironically comments on how all of these Presidential candidates are out of touch with the American people. The cartoonist ridicules all of the different candidates for the presidency because they are all out of touch with the American people but don't seem to realize it. This cartoon deals with the 2012 Presidential election and the different candidates who are running for President. The cartoon's message is that none of the current Presidential candidates are viewing the needs of the public and instead worrying about their own images. The cartoonist's point of view is more conservative and against all the candidates because he believes none of them will be able to secure the 2012 Presidential election.

Question Of The Week 12/11/11

President Obama's job approval rating according to www.gallup.com are that 42% approve while 50% of the public disapprove of his policies. His approval rating has been slowly declining ever since he entered office in 2008 which is following the trend that most other presidents face. He could however have a higher approval rating in the near future because of his recent handling of Libya, and the unemployment rate in the United States. If he continues to gain more support for the policies that he is putting in place then Obama has a good chance at reelection. Also the fact that he has raised more money than all the G.O.P candidates combined shows that the public still wants him to lead the nation.

The cartoon was drawn by Lisa Benson who started drawing cartoons in 1990 for a local monthly publication called, "The Senior Advocate." The mailman holding a bag of first class mail on top of the snail represents how the U.S. Postal Service is starting to cutback on the speed of delivery. Instead of first class mail taking 1 day to deliver it will start to take 2-3 days. The other mailman represents how the U.S. Postal Service is going to start losing customers because of the slower delivery time. The cartoonist uses satire because she is comparing the speed of first class mail to the pace of a snail which we all know is not fast at all. The issue that the cartoon deals with is the cutting back of the U.S. Postal Service because of the declining revenues that it is facing. More people are now using email instead of sending letters in order to communicate with each other. The cartoon's message is that first class mail will no longer be as reliable as it was before. The cartoonist's point of view is that we can't let the U.S. Postal Service slow down delivery times because it will end up damaging the government corporation even more in the long run.

Question Of The Week 12/4/11

Mitt Romney still seems to be a strong candidate for the G.O.P. nomination in the 2012 Presidential election. One specific reason why he could win is because his team has been working for months with a small paid staff and a ton of supporters in Iowa in order to secure the primary election. He also has many different endorsements from all levels of government however he is just waiting to announce them whenever he needs the support. One reason why he could lose is because of his controversial Romney-care plan that he put in place while Governor of Massachusetts. This would suggest to some Republican voters that he is more liberal that normal party lines.

The political cartoon was drawn by Jerry Holbert who is a staff cartoonist for the Boston Herald. The key objects in the cartoon are the deficit, debt, and slow economy. All of these different objects are represented as Thanksgiving leftovers that The White House still has to deal with The cartoonist uses satire because he represents all the different problems that our nations is currently facing as leftovers. The cartoon deals with the different economic issues are nation is facing such as the deficit, national debt, and the slowly recovering economy. The cartoon's message is that The White House needs to start cleaning up the mess we are currently in and start fixing these different economic problems. The cartoonists point-of-view is probably more conservative because of the way he is criticizing The White House for its current actions on these different issues.

Question Of The Week 11/20/11

Rick Perry now seems to be declining in the polls for the GOP nomination in the 2012 presidential election while Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are increasing in the polls. One reason that he could win is because he is Governor of Texas which shows that he has political experience and since Texas is such a large state it shows the American public that he does have the background in order to become President of the United States. Compared to Herman Cain who has no political background with the Presidential office being his first elected political position. One Reason why he could lose is because of the mistake he made in the debate when he forget the Federal agencies. This caused the American public to doubt his abilities because a President should know the bureaucracy inside and out. I believe that Rick Perry will slowly continue to decline in the polls as the other nominees pick up more support.

Jerry Holbert drew the cartoon who is a staff cartoonist for the Boston Herald. They key objects in the cartoon are the airplane that Obama is flying which shows he is trying to avoid the missile of criticism that is following him which represents the views of the American people. Then the donkey throwing out the oil reserves shows how the Democratic Party and Obama are trying to avoid that criticism by attempting to lower the cost of oil. This shows that Obama is trying to avoid the criticism that he is facing by releasing the oil reserves and allowing some people to feel that something is being done. The technique that the cartoonist uses here is ridicule because he is portraying Obama as trying to flee from the criticism. The issue that this cartoon deals with is the crticism that Obama faces and why he has been starting to let the oil reserves be released. The cartoon's message is that Obama is only releasing the oil reserves in order to have the American people distracted from the criticism that is chasing him. The cartoonist's point of view is probably more conservative than Obama's views on the issue and more leaning towards the Republican Party.

Question Of The Week #4

The biggest current political issue facing Virginia is transportation. Almost every budget meeting has a large part of it devoted to funds for transportation. The Metro is currently being expanded to Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County in order to ease traffic on our roadways. Also on I-495 they are constructing HOV lanes in order to relive some of the congestion during rush hour. Many of the candidates that are running in the local elections have a very firm stance on what they believe transportation should be in the future for Virginia. Since Northern Virginia is one of the fastest growing regions in the country so transportation will always be a major issue that will be on the policy agenda.

Current Event 10/27/11

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/27/us/politics/as-cain-touts-management-skills-ex-aides-tell-of-chaos.html

In this article it describes how Herman Cain's campaign is highly unorganized and goes against how a traditional campaign should be organized. Cain has hardly shown up and campaigned for the New Hampshire Primary or the Iowa Caucus. Both of these primaries have a lot of media attention and can create a lot of momentum for Herman Cain if he does well in them. Instead he has spent the bulk of his time running a campaign through the south. He has occasionally mishandled potential big donors and ignored possible voters. Cain who was a former business executive has been rising to the top of the polls and his campaign has shown promise since it began in the summer. However Cain has made several contradictory remarks on abortion and foreign policy which have forced him to spend time clarifying his own remarks. The campaign has acknowledged that it has been hard to keep up with Cain's growing popularity and that they are all working hard to make it happen. Also because Cain does not have political experience his campaign rests on the fact that he would bring executive level experience from the business world to the world of politics.

I believe that Herman Cain needs to create a better managed campagin in order to win the nomination from the Republican Party. He also needs to focus his attention more on detail and stop contradicting himself on his views which creates distrust among the voters. If the politican constantly is second guessing himself how will the public view him as a candidate for the presidency. More campagin management needs to be put in place which includes hiring more staff and creating more advertising mercandise to spread his name around to the public and his views on certain issues. Also since this is the primary election he needs to start gathering support from his base of voters which are the more liberal Republicans.

Question Of The Week #3

President Obama's Report Card
On health care he deserves an A because he passed the Obama care bill legislation and it will take effect soon giving all Americans the public option.
Dealing with the economic downturn President Obama deserves a C because he did pass a stimulus package to prevent a depression but still isn't doing enough to help things get better.
For the War On Terror he deserves an A- because he is slowly getting us out of The War In Iraq and Afghanistan with troops slowly being withdrawn.
His Reelection bid grade would be a B because he has raised the highest amount of campaign money in fundraising but the media and the public still view him negatively for his treatment of the economy.

Current Event 10/17/11

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20121362-503544.html

President Obama has suffered the most unrelenting negative treatment of all other presidential candidates over the past few months. Mr. Obama is the subject of negative assessments four times as often as he is the subject of positive assessments. This study cuts against the conservative belief that the liberal media aides Obama and the Democratic Party. He is largely covered as president and not as Obama the campaginer and coverage of him is linked to the struggling economy. Among the Republican candidiates Rick Perry had the most positive coverage. The only candidate who recieved more negtive media coverage than Obama was Newt Gingrich.

This article shows how President Obama is currently sturggling with trying to campagin. People are linking him to the struggling economy and they want somebody new to come in and try and imporve the situation. All the news associated with im in the eyes of the public is negative even though he has fulfilled most of his promises stated in the platform.

Question Of The Week #2

One political issue that I am currently interested in is Obama's proposed new jobs package to help lower the national unemployment rate which has remained the same at 9.1% for the past couple months. If this new stimulus package does pass it would help put a lot more people back to work and get the economy back on track. I am interested in this issue because it involves everybody in the nation because the recession is currently hurting every individual and business in the United States. Also because the economy has not improved at all in the past couple months and there is even talk of a second recession. We really need this jobs package to help support the U.S. economy from another downturn.

Current Event 10/14/11

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/16/ftn/main20121085.shtml

Herman Cain has recently surged in popularity these past few weeks for the Republican nomination. However The White House believes that Mitt Romney will end up receiving the G.O.P. nomination. This is because of the other short lived surges that Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michelle Bachmann had before Cain gained his upswing recently. Now the Obama administration will attempt to make Mitt Romney appear as a Wall Street sympathizer by taping into the public anger currently going on against the financial sector. In a debate Romney said that he would back another Wall Street bailout if needed. He has maintained consistent levels throughout the polls and has become a much better candidate from the last time he ran. Romney has to hope that he can ride out all the other candidates and remain the strongest for the G.O.P. nomination.

I believe that Mitt Romney will end up receiving the G.O.P. nomination because he appeals strongly with the public and has had consistency in the polls unlike the other Republican candidates. Also because his views are not to conservative or liberal which makes him popular to a larger number of American voters who say that they are more moderate. Michelle Bachmann appears more conservative while Rick Perry and Herman Cain both seem to be leaning more liberal. This leaves Romney in the middle for the majority of the Republican voters. However if he continues to support the financial sector with all the public anger directed towards it he could lose some conservative Republican voters.

Question Of The Week Current Event #1

The political party that I most closely align myself with is the Democratic Party. There are many different reasons why I support the Democratic Party. I agree with health care reform and the federal government expanding into this area. Every American should have the right to affordable health care. Also Democrats are opposed to incentives for big oil companies and favor investing in renewable energy. I believe that we need to find another way to produce energy because fossil fuels are becoming depleted and releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In contrast with the Republican Party which believes we should spend more money investing in fossil fuels such as offshore drilling. As we saw in the Gulf of Mexico with the Deepwater Horizon this can be a risky operation and end up destroying the environment and millions of people’s livelihoods.

Current Event 9/30/11

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/64450.html

In this article it talks about how Rep. Michele Bachmann tried to take the momentum from Governor Rick Perry by accusing him of being unprepared for foreign affairs at an event on Iowa in Monday. Bachmann tried to show that Perry who was struggling to produce a response on how as President he would handle Pakistan losing control of its nuclear arsenal. Bachmann also kept up the pressure on Perry's executive order requiring HPV vaccinations. However Bachmann still dropped 4 points in the polls but urged supporters to criticize her opponents. The topic of Cuban isolation also came up with Bachmann believing that Cuba is working with a terrorist organization called Hezbollah. This was Bachmann's second in trip in as many weeks to the state where she was born and seen as the frontrunner.

This shows that Rick Perry is starting to emerge as the leading candidate for the Republican nomination because now Bachmann is starting to slip in the polls. Even though he struggled to produce an answer to a hypothetical situation Perry still holds firm on the his positions on certain issues. With the primaries approaching soon Perry will be trying to solidify his lead by having more events and rallies on his positions.
